My Man Jeeves is a collection of short stories by P. G. Wodehouse, first published in the United Kingdom in May 1919 by George Newnes. Of the eight stories in the collection, half feature the popular characters Jeeves and Bertie Wooster, while the others concern Reggie Pepper, an early prototype for Wooster.
Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse, KBE ( /ˈwʊd.haʊs/; 15 October 1881 – 14 February 1975) was an English humorist, whose body of work includes novels, short stories, plays, poems, song lyrics, and numerous pieces of journalism. He enjoyed enormous popular success during a career that lasted more than seventy years and his many writings continue to be widely read. Despite the political and social upheavals that occurred during his life, much of which was spent in France and the United States, Wodehouse's main canvas remained that of a pre- and post-World War I English upper-class society, reflecting his birth, education and youthful writing career.

Poté, co se opět všichni setkají u Jenny, vyšle Crowley oba hraničáře a jejich přítele, mladého rytíře Horáce, na cestu do Clonmelu - jednoho z šesti hibernských království a Haltovy rodné země. Z politických důvodů mají za úkol zastavit Nezasvěcené, kteří stojí za rozvrácením zbývajících pěti království. Halt se zmíní, že zná zdejšího krále - je to totiž jeho mladší dvojče. Musí se tedy postavit nejen nebezpečnému Genovesanu Tennysonovi, vůdci Nezasvěcených, ale i své vlastní minulosti v podobě bratra, který se ho kdysi pokusil zabít.

One of the many differences between a good book and a great book is that a great book isn’t just a great read; it’s a great experience. It sucks you in every time you turn your eyes to its chapters, keeping you fully engrossed while the outside world fades into a muffled din. You cease to see your surroundings — whether sand or subway or sofa — in your periphery. Your personal thoughts dissipate, leaving no room in your mind for anything but the story before you. Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts is a great book.
From the first sentence — "It took me a long time and most of the world to learn what I know about love and fate and the choices we make, but the heart of it came to me in an instant, while I was chained to a wall and being tortured" — Lin Ford has our attention. Our narrator is a fleeing convict, escaped from a maximum-security prison in Australia, making his way through Bombay. It is in Bombay that he meets Prabakar, an indispensable man who becomes his friend and guide through the slums of the city.
To continue to delve into the plot of the sprawling novel here, in this small space, would not do the book justice. Instead, simply know that it is a story of a search for friendship, for meaning, for love and for identity. It is a search that leads our protagonist through Mumbai, into war in Afghanistan, along the shores of Goa, and beyond. It is the kind of book from which you’ll extract passages worth highlighting and sharing and referring back to. And in addition to all of this, there's an element of autobiography.
Roberts is, in fact, an Australian ex-convict and a recovering heroin addict. He escaped Pentridge Prison in 1980, where he was serving time for bank robbery, and settled in India, remaining there for ten years. Ultimately, Roberts landed back in prison and finished serving his time. In spite of the parallels between Roberts’ life and Lin’s life, however, Roberts insists his book is fiction — and so can take creative and linguistic liberty, which only adds to the book’s beauty.

Princezna Kassandra – nebo Evanlyn, jak ji zná Will – tedy přemluví svého otce, aby jí dovolil odplout na jih. K výpravě se ještě připojí Horác a Gilan, aby byla dostatečně zajištěna princeznina ochrana. Ale dostane se naše šestice statečných přes poušť, kterou obývají znesvářené kmeny a kde na každém kroku hrozí neznámá nebezpečí, k Erakovi včas?

Na radost ze shledání však není čas, protože Halt si je jistý, že šest Temudžajů tvořilo pouze průzkumný oddíl velikého vojska, které se chystá k vpádu do Skandie. Čtyři Araluenci musejí Skandijce varovat a nabídnout jim pomoc - pokud ovšem oberjarl jejich pomoc přijme.
Dokážou zapřisáhlí nepřátelé bojovat bok po boku, aby zachránili své životy a své země před ničivým vpádem nepřítele, který nezná slitování?

Mockingjay is a fitting end of the series that began with The Hunger Games (2008) and Catching Fire (2009) and will have the same lasting resonance as William Golding's Lord of the Flies and Stephen King's The Stand. However, the book is not a stand-alone; readers do need to be familiar with the first two titles in order to appreciate the events and characters in this one.

Every generation projects its fear: runaway science, communism, overpopulation, nuclear wars and, now, reality TV. The State of Panem—which needs to keep its tributaries subdued and its citizens complacent—may have created the Games, but mindless television is the real danger, the means by which society pacifies its citizens and punishes those who fail to conform. Will its connection to reality TV, ubiquitous today, date the book? It might, but for now, it makes this the right book at the right time. What happens if we choose entertainment over humanity? In Collins's world, we'll be obsessed with grooming, we'll talk funny, and all our sentences will end with the same rise as questions. When Katniss is sent to stylists to be made more telegenic before she competes, she stands naked in front of them, strangely unembarrassed. They're so unlike people that I'm no more self-conscious than if a trio of oddly colored birds were pecking around my feet, she thinks. In order not to hate these creatures who are sending her to her death, she imagines them as pets. It isn't just the contestants who risk the loss of their humanity. It is all who watch. Katniss struggles to win not only the Games but the inherent contest for audience approval. Because this is the first book in a series, not everything is resolved, and what is left unanswered is the central question. Has she sacrificed too much? We know what she has given up to survive, but not whether the price was too high.

The dynamics of Harriet's extended family are a strong focus of the novel, as are the lifestyles and customs of contrasting Southerners.

In 2002, Tartt described it as "a frightening, scary book about children coming into contact with the world of adults in a frightening way... After The Secret History I wanted to write a different kind of book on every single level. I wanted to take on a completely different set of technical problems. The Secret History was all from the point of view of Richard, a single camera, but the new book is symphonic, like War And Peace. That's widely thought to be the most difficult form."

Harriet and her sister have been raised largely by their grandmother Edie, a bevy of adoring great-aunts, and the family's longtime housekeeper, Ida Rhew. (Robin's death sent the girls' mother into a dreamy depression from which she has never awakened, and their father lives with a mistress in Nashville, returning home only at Christmas.) Harriet, who looks like a "small badger," is the sort of child who likes to read about Genghis Khan and Captain Scott and to stir up fights among her great-aunts by telling them what they really think of each other's Christmas gifts. But she, too, has grown up obsessed with her brother's death, which she blames for the disintegration of her family. Left to her own devices for the summer, she resolves to track down and punish Robin's killer, whom she decides, based on the most circumstantial indications, must be Danny Ratliff, a former classmate of Robin's who has sunk into a life of petty crime. As Harriet trails Danny around town (there are shades of Harriet the Spy here), waiting for the right moment to strike, he becomes equally obsessed with her, convinced that she is out to get him for an entirely different reason.

Večírek, který pro své přátele a příbuzné uspořádali Hector a Aisha se úplně nepovedl. Hectorův bratranec Harry vlepil pohlavek nezvladatelnému rozmazlenému čtyřletému synovi Aishiny přítelkyně. Něco naprosto nepředstavitelného! I chlapeček ví, že se jej nesmí nikdo dotknout, pokud k tomu on nedá souhlas! A celá civilizovaná společnost přeci ví, že je nepřípustné bít malé děti. Nebo ne?! Matka dítěte je odhodlána dát Harryho k soudu. Společnost je zaskočena. Většina Harryho odsuzuje. Je agresivní, arogantní, bohatý. Někteří si ale myslí něco jiného. Celou situaci a vztahy uváděné společnosti nahlížíme s autorem postupně očima osmi účastníků večírku a postupně tak rozkrýváme kdo je kdo, motivaci a "původ" jejich názorů a vztahů, jejich niterné pocity, minulost, prožitky. Autor nechává čtenáře "ztotožnit se" s každou z postav, poznat, že každý pohled může být svým způsobem pravdivý - a že každy si cosi o svém životě a o sobě samém nalhává - a lže i lidem okolo sebe. Je třeba projít katarzí a oprostit se od lži a také od společenské přetvářky a vlastně i od některých lidí, aby bylo možno pokračovat v životě smysluplněji dál. Tak jako ve své novele "Ari", i zde autor vychází ze zkušenosti života v řecké komunitě v současné Austrálii.

Pavla Horáková - Tajemství Hrobaříků

Pátrání na Olšanských hřbitovech je zavede na stopu skupiny podezřelých individuí, která pravděpodobně poškozuje hroby. Mimo to se Hrobaříci cítí sledováni mužem v tmavých brýlích. Postupně jim pak dochází, že to, že všichni bydlí v blízkosti Olšan a mají tu pohřbené své blízké, není náhoda. A že bratrstvo má své kořeny v době náletu na Prahu v roce 1945, kdy v krátké chvíli zahynulo velké množství civilních obyvatel.

Paolo Bacigalupi's debut novel, is causing quite a stir in science fiction circles, with whispers of a Hugo nomination and critical praise from all sides.
Bacigalupi is already well known for his amazing short stories, such as the Hugo-nominated "The Calorie Man," which is set in the same world that The Windup Girl takes place in. He has a deserved reputation as a prose-stylist whose facility with language borders on the poetic, and as someone whose visionary ideas benefit from this poetic presentation.
In The Windup Girl, we are plunged into a fraught and difficult world: energy collapse and environmental disasters have changed the shape of the planet, swamping its coastal cities and destroying our capacity to travel or move freight at high speeds. Add to this a series of genetic-engineering screwups that lay waste to the world's crops and trigger wave after wave of punishing plagues, and the rise of midwestern American genetic engineering cartels that control the world's supply of plague-resistant GM crops.
Anderson Lake is one such Calorie Man, working undercover in Thailand, a rogue state where generippers reverse-engineer the food cartels' sterile crops and combine them with carefully hoarded genetic material from the Thai seedbank. Anderson lives in Bangkok, undercover, running a factory nominally involved in the manufacture of experimental windup springs that can compactly and efficiently store the energy pushed into them by GM elephants. He is the hub around which many stories spin: that of Hock Seng, a former wealthy Malay Chinese who has fled an ethnic purge and now runs Anderson's factory; that of Jaidee, the Tiger of Bangkok, a hard-fighting, uncorruptable shock-trooper in the Thai environment ministry; and Emiko, a "new person" manufactured in a Japanese vat to be a perfect servile helper, abandoned by her owner to the brothels of Thailand, where she is cruelly mistreated.
The Windup Girl is a story about colonialism, independence, mysticism and ethics, sex and loyalty, and the opposing forces of greed and empathy. Filled with complex and flawed characters who must struggle to overcome their failings, The Windup Girl has no easy or pat answers, but rather charges the reader to summon empathy for imperfect humans who fail as often as they succeed.
But The Windup Girl is also an exciting story about industrial espionage, civil war, and political struggle, filled with heart-thudding action sequences, sordid sex, and enough technical speculation for two lesser novels.
Bacigalupi shows every sign of becoming one of sf's major talents, if he isn't already. In addition to being a magnificent and passionate writer, he is a smart and genuinely nice guy, a truly winning combination. Kudos to him for this wonderful debut, and to the independent publisher Night Shade Books for bringing it to us.

Ve své knize autor navazuje na svoji bakalářskou práci, věnovanou ekonomickému myšlení Tomáše Akvinského, zabývá se už ale ekonomickým myšlením v širší perspektivě: od Sumerů přes Židy, středověk a třeba ekonomické názory J.A. Komenského až po dnešek. Sedláček ukazuje, že jisté ekonomické povědomí existovalo již odpradávna, stejně jako určité mechanismy, jak zmírňovat sociální rozdíly a omezovat vliv monopolů (tak vysvětluje židovský institut jubilejního roku, kdy se měly odpouštět dluhy a Izraelci v otroctví měli být osvobozeni). Zároveň ale upozorňuje, že jen málokterý ekonom opravdu zakládal svoje teorie jen na tom, že lidem jde především o sledování vlastního užitku a ekonomika se tak v autorově podání proměňuje v něco, co nemá daleko k náboženství a umění, neboť je to „mystérium, spontánní tajemství a je zázrak, že (vůbec) funguje“. Na stránkách Sedláčkovy knihy také dochází k mnoha skutečně překvapivým setkáním: tak Mistra Eckharta autor spojuje s Googlem a Martina Bubera s Adamem Smithem (v autorově interpretaci ovšem tito dva autoři k sobě nemají zase tak daleko). Sedláčkův ekonomický slovník, s nímž pojednává třeba o bibli („dobro outgoing, dobro incoming“), působí také značně nevšedně. Jeho kniha poskytuje četné podněty k dalšímu promýšlení či doplňování: například nakolik dnes ekonomické modely pronikají do teologického myšlení, kde se běžně používá pojmu ekonomie spásy („plán spásy stanovený Bohem, uskutečněný a zjevený v celkovém uspořádání dějin, plán, který nachází v Kristu svůj střed a svůj vrchol“), nebo jak se ekonomie a náboženství prolínají v dnešním Izraeli (židovský stát se například musí o Velikonocích zbavit všeho obilí, protože v něm mohou být kvasnice, a to tak, že ho prodá za symbolickou cenu jednomu Palestinci s tím, že přístup k němu bude mít až po 9 dnech, osmý den - po konci svátků - ale stát od smlouvy odstoupí). V pestré škále kultur, jmen, názorových směrů a vědních disciplin se přitom Sedláček v knize pohybuje docela s přehledem, i když místy jsem měl přeci jen dojem, že autor si počíná poněkud libovolně při výběru toho, na koho se odvolává a koho naopak pomíjí, například když rozvíjí teorii o tom, že „matematika byla prvotně jen emocí, až postupně tento vjem zracionálněl“, odkazuje na psycholožku J. Heffernanovou a mnohem významnější autory jako Damasio či Ridley nechává stranou (ale libovolně samozřejmě píšeme všichni…).

Děj románu umístil autor do nedaleké budoucnosti, jejímž klíčovým letopočtem se stává rok 2018. Právě tehdy dojde k radikální proměně světa, jejíž příčinou se paradoxně stane práce na projektu nového léku, který má prodloužit lidský života a imunitu člověka. Tento medikament má být získán z viru, přenášeného poměrně vzácným druhem netopýrů žijících v bolivijské džungli a jeho výzkum je testován na trestancích, odsouzených k smrti. Do tohoto projektu je však náhle zařazena i šestiletá Amy, která je za tímto účelem unesena z kláštera, kam ji do rukou jedné řádové sestry odložila její matka. Celý experiment, ostře sledovaný americkou vládou, však skončí totálním fiaskem, když se několika vězňům podaří uprchnout. Spolu s nimi se však dostává na "svobodu" i nebezpečná infekce, která mění téměř všechny obyvatele v seskupení upírů, viráků, čmoudů či jiných, podobně nakažených bytostí, jež žene vpřed nelítostná touha po krvi a zabíjení. Katastrofa nabývá obřích rozměrů a nikdo neví, jak ji zastavit a kde hledat naději na záchranu.

Ve třiadvaceti letech se autor, do té doby závislý na omamných látkách a alkoholu tím nejhorším možným způsobem, dostal fyzicky i psychicky do stavu přímého ohrožení života. Po zásahu rodiny souhlasil s umístěním do léčebny drogových závislostí s vědomím, že odtud vede cesta buď na hřbitov, nebo zpátky do života. Popisuje bezprostředně, syrově a nevybíravým jazykem generace posledních let 20. století nejen stavy závislých, ale i prostředí, spolupacienty, způsob a postup léčení a úskalí rehabilitace. Přes ryze osobní pocity, fyzická i psychická traumata se v knize i v životě dobírá k zarputilému odhodlání nad závislostí zvítězit i přes častou nejistotu a beznaděj, která toto odhodlání doprovází, a své vítězství si bez sentimentality vychutnává.

Líbí se mi recenze Minneapolis Star-Tribune: 'Když jsme dočetli Milion malých střípků, byli jsme jako horníci, když je vytáhnou ze zasypané šachty: vyčerpaní, začernění, toužící se nadechnout, ale naživu, byla to jízda, sami se tomu divíme, ale jsme naživu.'

The narrative is somewhat burdened by self-consciousness that borders on preciosity, but for Rushdie fans this is a splendid feast.

Mariusz Szczygiel - Gottland

Na počátku si dovolím řečnickou otázku: Jaký úspěch, ať již v měřítku oslovených čtenářů tak z hlediska obchodního modelu, může mít sbírka šestnácti reportáží od „jakéhosi polského žurnalisty“, který se polské literární obci snažil přiblížit doposud netušenou tvář onoho českého souseda, který je v Polsku zařazen do kategorie bezpáteřního národa zbabělců a Švejků?! To, že se tato kniha Mariusze Szczygieła, Gottland, stala v Polsku obrovskou literární senzací, ba byla svými čtenáři ohodnocena jako nejlepší kniha roku 2006, nás může nechat poměrně klidnými. Nicméně to, že se kniha stala bestsellerem i pro současné zcela bulvárně zaměřené české čtenáře (více 20.000 doposud prodaných výtisků drží krok s nejprodávanějším českým autorem Michalem Vieweghem), ba podobný úspěch se čeká i v dalších zemích, Německa nevyjímaje, již naznačuje, že Szczygiełova více než pětiletá práce, kdy se krom usilovného pátrání v pramenech a výslechu svědků, naučil i česky, má na svých hubených 150 stranách opravdu co říci.
V prvé řadě je nutné zdůraznit, že Szczygieł zaměřil pouze na onu, pro běžného polského čtenáře, zcela neznámou tvář českého národa. Historii, mentalitu, a osobnosti typu, jak by asi evokoval název, provařeného Karla Gotta, ale i například Václava Havla, Tomáše Garrigue Masaryka, Jana Palacha, Karla Kryla, potažmo obligátního Švejka, tak zcela opomíjí. Naopak pro polského čtenáře zcela nepochopitelnou dobu normalizace charakterizovanou kombinací atmosféry strachu a společenské apatie, ilustruje na fenoménu tzv. kafkárny, kdy se americká stipendistka Joy Buchanan snaží dopátrat, co tento pojem vlastně znamená, ale dostává pouze neurčité a vyhýbavé odpovědi, aby to snad nebylo „něco proti něčemu“.
Podobně vykreslené jsou například 50. léta na autorovi brakové literatury Eduardovi Kirchbergerovi, jenž v roce 1948 nejprve uteče do západního Německa, aby se po dvou letech nejenže vrátil zpět do komunistickým režimem zmítaného Československa. Zde prošel vnitřní katarzí, vymazal svůj dosavadní život a pod novým jménem Karel Fabián se stal socialisticky uvědomělým spisovatelem románů zcela nekriticky hlásajících oficiální propagandu. 50. léta rovněž ilustruje na postavě zcela průměrného sochaře Otakara Švece, který byl proti své vůli vybrán, aby nad Prahou postavil několik desítek metrů vysokou sochu Stalina. Neunese však soustavný tlak a před dokončením sochy spáchá sebevraždu. (Aby byla socha de facto vzápětí a v maximální tichosti zase zlikvidována.)
Leitmotivem Gottlandu tedy není bulvární objevování senzací. A není jim ani náprava značně pokřiveného vnímání českého národa (vnímaného jakožto zmíněný národ zbabělců a Švejků), ale naopak Szczygieł čtenáři překládá jen určitou mozaiku s naznačenými portréty vzájemně zcela odlišných osobností - krom zmíněného spisovatele Eduarda Kirchberga/Karla Fabiána a sochaře Otakara Švece, je to továrník Tomáš Baťa, herečka Lída Baarová, spisovatel Jan Procházka, lékařka a politička Jaroslava Moserová, novodobý následník Palacha Zdeněk Adamec, zpěvačka Marta Kubišová a další. To vše s dovětkem, že Szczygieł nejen nemoralizuje, ale naopak vedle sebe rovnocenně staví kladná i záporná hodnocení dle soudobých i současných pramenů a interpretací tak, že Gottland český národ sice nerehabilituje, ale pro nečeského čtenáře vede k umírnění mnohdy zcela kategorických soudů. Pro čtenáře českého naopak přináší nezúčastněný nadhled nad vlastními dějinami.

Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog), published in 1889, is a humorous account by Jerome K. Jerome of a boating holiday on the Thames between Kingston and Oxford.

The book was initially intended to be a serious travel guide, with accounts of local history along the route, but the humorous elements took over to the point where the serious and somewhat sentimental passages seem a distraction to the comic novel. One of the most praised things about Three Men in a Boat is how undated it appears to modern readers — the jokes seem fresh and witty even today.

The three men are based on Jerome himself (the narrator J.) and two real-life friends, George Wingrave (who went on to become a senior manager in Barclays Bank) and Carl Hentschel (the founder of a London printing business, called Harris in the book), with whom he often took boating trips. The dog, Montmorency, is entirely fictional but, "as Jerome admits, developed out of that area of inner consciousness which, in all Englishmen, contains an element of the dog." The trip is a typical boating holiday of the time in a Thames camping skiff. This was just after commercial boat traffic on the Upper Thames had died out, replaced by the 1880s craze for boating as a leisure activity.

Because of the overwhelming success of Three Men in a Boat, Jerome later published a sequel, about a cycling tour in Germany, entitled Three Men on the Bummel.

Přesvědčí ho až útoky proti jeho ženě a hrdina se opět ponoří do kalných vod světové špionáže.

Na cestě za nalezením vlastní identity mu pomáhá žena, která byla zprvu jeho rukojmím, později však dobrovolnou pomocnicí a která první odhadla, že jeho osobnost není tak krutá a nelítostná, jak si představoval.

Autor je citlivý a obratný vypravěč, který si dovede podrobit téma; oslňuje širokými znalostmi, trefnými analýzami osob i doby a kompoziční bravurou. S jeho pomocí zabloudíme hluboko do nepoznané lidské duše, kde na nás čekají nemalá překvapení. Objemná kniha, a přesto neunaví.

In the first place, that stuff bores me, and in the second place, my parents would have about two hemorrhages apiece if I told anything pretty personal about them."
His constant wry observations about what he encounters, from teachers to phonies (the two of course are not mutually exclusive) capture the essence of the eternal teenage experience of alienation.

When Elspeth Noblin dies, she leaves everything to the 20-year-old American twin daughters of her own long-estranged twin, Edie. Valentina and Julia, as enmeshed as Elspeth and Edie once were, move into Elspeth's London flat bordering Highgate Cemetery in a building occupied by Elspeth's lover, Robert, and the novel's most interesting character, Martin, whose wife is long suffering due to his crushing and beautifully portrayed OCD. The girls are pallid and incurious; they wander around London and spend time with Robert and Martin and Elspeth's ghost. Valentina's developing relationship with Robert arouses mild jealousy, and when Valentina pursues her interest in fashion design, Julia disapproves, which leads Valentina and Elspeth to concoct an extreme plan to allow Valentina to lead her own life. The plan, unsurprisingly, goes awry, followed by weakly foreshadowed and confusing twists that take the plot from dull to silly. While Niffenegger's gifted prose and past success will garner readers, the story is a disappointment.

Disguised as a terrorist and aided by the young sultan and a beautiful American-Arab agent, Kendrick succeeds so well that his anonymity is betrayed, and he becomes an instant hero back home, as well as a reluctant presidential candidate. After his cover is blown, however, he also becomes the target for terrorist assassination. Behind all the evildoing is a cabal headed by a man who calls himself the Mahdi, its purpose to acquire the power that money brings by selling arms to religious fanatics. And on this side of the ocean there are other secret forces at work, with awesome power at their command. While violence piles on violence, Ludlum does some high-flown moralizing. The story's underlying philosophy can be found, or at least sought, in the characteristically fuzzy statement: "The arrogance of blind belief led all the mendacities of human thought."

The three women who form its core, idealistic Skeeter, loving Aibileen, and sarcastic, sassy Minny, narrate their chapters each in a voice that is distinctive as Minny's caramel cake no one else in Jackson, Mississippi, can duplicate.

These stories of the black maids working for white women in the state of Mississippi of the 60s have an insiders' view of child-rearing, Junior League benefits, town gossip, and race relations.

Hilly is the town's white Queen Bee with an antebellum attitude towards race. She hopes to lead her minions into the latter part of the century with the "enlightened" view of making sure every home in Jackson, Mississippi, has a separate toilet for the help. Her crusade is, she says, based on clear hygienic criteria, which will save both blacks and whites from heinous diseases.

Despite the fact that the maids prepare the food, care for the children, and clean every part of every home, privy to every secret, many of the white women look at their black maids as an alien race. There are more enlightened views, especially those of Skeeter, a white, single woman with a college degree, who aspires to more than earning her MRS. Skeeter begins collecting the maids' stories. And the maids themselves find the issue of race humiliating, infuriating, life-controlling. Race sows bitter seeds in the dignity of women who feel they have no choices except to follow their mamas into the white women's kitchens and laundries. Aibilene says, "I just want things to be better for the kids." Their hopes lie in education and improvement, change someday for their children.

There is real danger for the maids sharing their stories as well as danger for Skeeter herself. The death of Medgar Evers touches the women deeply, making them question their work and a decision to forge ahead, hoping their book can be published anonymously and yet not recognized by the very white women they know to the last deviled egg and crack in a dining room table.

The relationships between the maids and the white children, the maids and some kind employers, including "white trash" Cecilia Foot, illuminate the strange history of the South. The love Aibileen shows for Mae Mobley matches the love Skeeter felt as a white child from her maid-nanny Constantine.

There is never a dull moment in this long book. It is compulsively readable while teaching strong truths about the way the United States evolved from a shameful undercurrent of persistent racism to the hopes and dreams of Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks. Ultimately, will the next generations children learn (and be taught) that skin color is nothing more than a wrapping for the person who lives within?

Mladá dívka přichází sloužit do domácnosti dvou starých žen, aniž by tušila, jak neobvyklá bude hlavní "práce", která ji zde čeká. Seznamuje se i s dalšími ženskými aktérkami příběhu, do jejichž osudů zasáhl tak či onak již zesnulý majitel místního hotelu. Před čtenářem se postupně odkrývá historie událostí plných emocí a skrytých vášní. Ale ani současnost není jiná, částečně přičiněním duchů minulosti, částečně stále se opakujícím, přirozeným koloběhem lásky a nenávisti... Autorka dokáže v bravurní zkratce na malém prostoru rozdat karty mnoha osudů, na druhé straně někdy příliš spoléhá na sílu atmosféry a fantazie a nechává v textu logické mezery.

Narrated in the form of letters, diary entries and newspaper clippings, the novel takes a while to get going, but once it does, it achieves a rare dramatic power that reaches its emotional peak when Harrison wittily and eloquently defends himself before the House Un-American Activities Committee (on the panel is a young Dick Nixon). Employed by the American imagination, is how one character describes Harrison, a term that could apply equally to Kingsolver as she masterfully resurrects a dark period in American history with the assured hand of a true literary artist. The Lacuna contains two very distinct parts. One features a vibrant Mexican landscape with the equally colorful personalities of Rivera, Kahlo, and Trotsky. The other centers more on Harrison's reclusive existence in small-town America and his battle with the House Un-American Activities Committee. Despite the prodigious research that both parts exhibit, critics clearly preferred the former, marveling at Kingsolver's lyrical passages and her expert recreation of 1930s Mexico. A few reviewers also noted instances of sermonizing and inaccurate history. However, the novel's compelling, engrossing story certainly outweighed these minor complaints, and in the end, Kingsolver has created a convincing "tableau vivant of epochs and people that time has transformed almost past recognition" (New York Times Book Review).

As in its predecessor, we are back in the Yorkshire town of Malbry, and in the company of a young man whose behaviour verges on the sociopathic. BB is in his 40s, still living with his mother and making his living with an unrewarding (in every sense) hospital job. His ‘real’ world is a virtual one. On a website which he has called ‘badguysrock’, he has an avatar -- and as the blueeyedboy of the title, he deals in deeply unsettling violent scenarios which feature people from his own life. As we enter deeper into this murky world, we learn other equally disturbing facts. BB has an unhealthy relationship with his mother, whose violent, controlling behaviour is some kind of a pointer to the unhappy man he has become as an adult. What's more, he appears to be the only surviving brother of a group of three. His dead brothers were named after the colours in which their mother dressed them, and had died in mysterious circumstances. There are so many off-kilter aspects to this world that readers will quickly discern it is only a matter of time before something very nasty happens. Like Iain Banks’ The Wasp Factory, Harris provides us with a narrator we cannot trust -- the only thing certain is that chaos and destruction lie at the heart of this queasy narrative. Harris’ book demands patience and does not render up all its secrets immediately, but those who respond to unusual, transgressive fiction will find it worth persevering; Harris has a mesmerising tale to tell. And be assured -- Chocolat this isn't.

Mimovolné přesuny v čase trápí knihovníka Henryho, který v reálném čase vede bouřlivý život neslučující se s jeho úctyhodným a usedlým povoláním. Pokud nedobrovolně cestuje v čase, stává se z něho psanec, zloděj a rváč. Ústřední postavou děje však není Henry, ale jeho žena, výtvarnice Clare, z dobře situované rodiny. Právě díky jejímu vlivu se floutek Henry postupně mění, usazuje se, začíná pociťovat zodpovědnost a uvědomovat si, že kvůli své neobvyklé schopnosti ještě nemusí výt středem vesmíru.
Henryho výjimečnost, zpočátku lákavá a vzrušující, se nakonec ukazuje jako prokletí, jako nevyléčitelná choroba, která sice není infekční, ale zato je dědičná. Nedobrovolné a hlavně neovladatelné cesty v čase nejsou vítaným dobrodružstvím ale noční můrou. Clare před neúprosnou realitou nachází útěchu a realizuje se v tichém světě barev, plastik a obrazů, který je nepochybně autorce velmi blízký. Čas je v autorčině pojetí onou pověstnou dravou řekou, která i těm nejsilnějším podráží nohy, smete všechno, co jí stojí v cestě, neodpouští sebemenší zaváhání, nezná slitování, řídí se vlastními zákony.
Román Audrey Niffeneggerové Zakletý v čase se poněkud vymyká představě o science fiction, přinejmenším v porovnání s klasickými díly tohoto žánru. Poutavý děj zasazený do uměleckého prostředí současné Ameriky nabírá hned od prvních stránek strhující spád. Postavy Audrey Niffenegger rozhodně nejsou ploché, nic lidského jim není cizí, rostou a vyzrávají v průběhu děje.

A chce, aby Tonička zůstala v jeho lesknoucím se zmrzlém světě. Navždy. Tonička bude potřebovat všechnu svou prohnanost, aby přežila do jara. Bude také potřebovat pomoc všech svých přátel, od mladých čarodějek až po legendární Bábi Zlopočasnou. A ještě - Svobodnej národ! Ty nejodvážnější, nejhouževnatější a nejsmradlavější piktmužíky, jací kdy byli vyhnáni ze Země víl – ať už se jí to líbí nebo ne. Vypadá to na velmi chladné období, protože jestli Tonička nepřežije do jara – jaro už nepřijde.
